Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to common questions about orthopedic care at West Tennessee Healthcare (WTH).

What is the Joint Effort Class and do I have to attend?
The Joint Effort Class is a one-day pre-surgery program where you complete all of your pre-surgical testing, meet your case manager, and walk through exactly what to expect before, during, and after your procedure. It's all done in a single visit at one location. It's required for joint replacement patients because it's the foundation of how we coordinate your entire care plan.
How do I know if I need surgery or if there are other options?
Our orthopedic specialists always explore non-surgical treatments first, including physical therapy, injections, bracing, and medication management. Surgery is only recommended when conservative options haven't provided relief. Your evaluation will include a full assessment and an honest conversation about what makes sense for your situation.
How long will I be in the hospital after surgery?
Many of our joint replacement patients go home the same day as their procedure. Advances in surgical technique, anesthesia, and pain management have dramatically shortened hospital stays. Your surgeon and case manager will discuss your specific recovery timeline during your pre-surgery visit.
Will I need physical therapy after surgery, and where do I go?
Yes. Physical therapy is a critical part of your recovery. WTH partners with Sports Plus, which operates 13 locations across West Tennessee, so you can access post-surgical rehab close to home without a long drive. Your case manager will schedule your first appointment before you leave the hospital.
Why should I choose WTH instead of going to Nashville or Memphis for my surgery?
West Tennessee Healthcare's Orthopedic Program has earned the Joint Commission Disease-Specific Certification for Hip and Knee Replacement, Blue Distinction Center Plus recognition, and the Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award — reflecting our commitment to safe, high-quality orthopedic care.

The difference is that here, your entire journey from evaluation to surgery to rehabilitation is coordinated by one team in one place with 17 rehab locations close to home. No long drives, no navigating a sprawling hospital system, no gaps in your care.
