Infectious Disease

When you or a loved one develop an infection of some sort, it can be overwhelming and even scary. Have peace of mind in knowing the team of infectious disease specialists at West Tennessee Medical Group is here to provide the care you need, close to home.

Caring for a Full Spectrum of Infectious Disease

The human immune system is designed to fight off germs and other pathogens that find their way into the body, but occasionally it’s challenged by an infectious disease. These diseases can be caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi, parasites, and, less commonly, proteins known as prions. An infectious disease may spread from person to person or through insect bites and contaminated substances, including food, water, or the soil.

While many infectious diseases, such as the common cold, are minor and easily treated through at-home care, other infections can linger or cause serious complications. At West Tennessee Medical Group Infectious Disease, our providers have specialized knowledge in caring for:

  • Atypical mycobacterium infections
  • Complicated urinary tract infections
  • Diabetic foot infections
  • Endocarditis
  • Fungal pneumonia
  • Osteomyelitis
  • Sexually transmitted infections
  • Skin and soft tissue infections

We can also provide care for infections related to orthopedic devices or other devices implanted in the body.

Comprehensive Infectious Disease Diagnosis & Treatment

While anyone can develop an infectious disease, certain people are at a higher risk of developing an infection and complications related to infection. This includes those with compromised immune systems, young children, women who are pregnant, older adults, those who are unvaccinated, healthcare workers, and those traveling to high-risk areas.

We provide the advanced care these patients and others require for diagnosing and treating infectious disease. Our goal is twofold—we want to eradicate the underlying infection while also preventing complications from the infection.

Our infectious disease providers use a variety of tools to accurately diagnose the source of infection, which may include nasal or throat swabs, biopsies, skin samples, imaging scans, or urine, blood, saliva, or stool analysis. After a diagnosis is made, treatment will vary depending on the type of infection and its severity.

Throughout the diagnostic and treatment process, we will collaborate with your primary care provider and other specialists to ensure you have the quality care you need.
