Jackson, Tennessee (December 18, 2023) – West Tennessee Healthcare is pleased to announce that its team of Cardiothoracic Surgeons is offering robotic heart valve surgery at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. Led by cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Hetal Patel and his partners, this minimally invasive technique allows for a quicker recovery time and does not require sternal incision. One year ago, the same team launched minimal access robotic-assisted bypass surgery (specifically, the procedure known as coronary artery bypass graft surgery, or CABG) in Jackson.
A faster recovery is possible because of the minimally invasive approach and most patients are able to return to daily activities and work much quicker than traditional surgery which involves big cuts in the breastbone. Patients typically spend three to five days in the hospital and are fully recovered within two weeks after a minimally invasive, robotic-assisted surgery; however, patients can spend twice as long in the hospital and can take up to six weeks to recover from an open procedure. Each minimally invasive cardiac surgery is customized for the patient and their needs.
Our community benefits from surgeons thinking outside the box and advocating for the best patient care in the West Tennessee community. Only a handful of centers in the state of Tennessee provide this type of boutique surgery, and currently, the team at Jackson-Madison County is the only center west of Nashville to provide robotic heart surgery.
A focused and specialized support team comprising cardiac anesthesia, cardiac perfusion, First Assistants, and nurses coordinate efforts to bring this procedure to the patients of West Tennessee. A team of specially trained staff assists Dr. Patel with laboratory preparation and case study to maintain focus on patient care and safety as smaller incisions are used.
The cardiothoracic surgery group consists of Hetal Patel MD MBA FACS, Eric Sievers MD FACS, and Theodore Wright MD who are proud to be local community surgeons as part of West Tennessee Medical Group and are currently accepting new patients.
